Holiday Mini Sessions 2011

It's my favorite time of year. Holiday Mini Sessions are right around the corner! I'm so excited! A few new things this year - three location choices instead of one, an added session date so you won't miss out, a pre-designed holiday card that can be printed just like you would print a 5x7 portrait, and yummy treats for every session!
I'm still nailing down all the details for the "Vintage Christmas" session, but think old red truck, plaid shirts, down vests, rubber boots, scarves, and mittens. Should be fun! Also, if the snow comes early this year, we'll head to the mountain for the last mini session. If Mother Nature chooses not to bless us early, then we'll come up with something better!

The Traffie Family for Lens of Hope

Sometimes I just don't know what to say. When my thoughts run deep and my feelings run right to the core, I just can't ever find the right words. There are so many things I don't know - so many unanswered questions. So, I'll just write what I do know.

When I look at this family I see something amazing. I see a family who has faced cancer and chosen to still put their Hope in an amazing God. I see a three year old who has had to endure more than most of us ever will. I see a dad who stands strong. I see a sister with beautiful eyes who cares about her siblings and is wise beyond her years. I see a munchkin with mischief in his silly grin. I see a brother who loves to run and jump and get dirty. I see a mom who steadfastly chooses to praise God and trust in His plan. I see a family who loves and lives.

One in a Million

I could stare at this sweet boy forever. Of course, his baby blues stood out from the moment I met him, but it took me awhile before I realized how incredibly special they really are. Both of his parents have brown eyes and mom is fairly certain she does not carry the recessive blue gene. That truly makes this little man one in a million. We braved a bit of the Pacific Northwest drizzle and sacrificed some great heels to the mud to get these shots, but how can you not go all out for a one in a million kiddo?

We've known Val for a few years. We've shared meals, conversation, and even a couple rounds of Settlers. She's endured my husband's teasing, my brother's debates and the craziness of our house. And all the while we kept our eye out wondering who would come along and steal her heart. Then along came Garrett.

When Val called and asked if we wanted to go out on a double date with her, we knew something must be serious. Over dinner at Mcmenamin's we clearly saw how much Garrett cared for Val. His easy smile and slight sarcasm won us over. And then as if to prove their potential for longevity, they crushed as at shuffle board.

Forever Family

Talk about pictures that make me happy...!! For a couple of years Matt and Eryn let all of us in on their adoption journey. We fund raised with them, got butterflies before their home visit, breathed a sigh of relief when the dossier was finished, cried when we heard they saw Lucy for the first time on Christmas, and then prayed and prayed that the time to hold their babe would soon come. And now, here they are - a complete family of five.

Five people meant to be together...forever.

These boys love to get dirty, and build fires, and roast marshmallows, and play in the woods. And Lucy? Well, she's itching to keep up with them. So what better thing to do on a school night than to set up camp at battle Ground Lake and capture some of their favorite things? They had Hebrew Nationals, marshmallows, Pirate's Booty, and hot cocoa. But most of all they shared that marshmallowy sticky kind of love that holds families together.

Rain Couldn't Stop Us...

Rain...no rain...rain...no rain. We phoned each other about 5 times the day of our shoot trying to decide if we should go for it or reschedule. In the true spirit of the Northwest we decided to just do it. 45 minutes later the clouds came in and the downpour started. And that's when Dawn and David went form being clients to friends. As I started to jump into my car to wait out the passing shower they told me to jump into theirs. And there we sat for almost an hour chatting and pulling out their weather radar phone apps trying to figure out just what this storm was going to do.

That same gentle welcoming spirit that lives in both of them is just one of the traits that is going to make these two AMAZING parents. The excitement and joy in their eyes when they talk about this little one is so genuine. I can't wait to see that little bundle snuggled in their arms.

Meet the McCombs

The moment I pulled up to our session I should have known Joyce was not your typical mom. Her mom mobile? A gigantic pick up truck.

Later as we talked about things the family likes to do together, she kind of chuckled. Apparently Joyce is in line to win "Adventure Mom of the Year". Her kids have been skiing or snowboarding since they could say "black diamond". She also heads up the Ski bus program at King's Way to bring a little bit of the mountain into even more kids' lives. When the snow melts, she pulls out their ATV's and heads to the dunes for a little four wheelin' fun. These kids are blessed with one fun momma!

Our session was a blast. Of course it was. With Joyce, how could it have been anything else? She's bread confidence in her children and I could see it in the way they walked, talked, and freely joked around.

Ummm... melt my heart. Personality just oozes out of this little cutie pie - who happens to be one of my most favorite little models. I've been photographing her since she was born. Singing, dancing, and telling her mommy how beautiful she is - that's Miss Helaina. She had us both laughing the entire time.

I couldn't help but smile as I sat editing these images today. Isn't this family adorable? Like seriously adorable. Their youngest was a bit shy, but I could catch glimpses of that mischievous sparkle in his eyes and I know he's got some pretty funny stuff up his sleeves and some slick dance moves too. And their daughter...just pure sweetness. Sometimes you meet someone and without saying a word you can literally see the kindness in their eyes. I could have sat for hours with her. Not one complaint, just smile after smile.

They say apples don't fall far from the tree. If that's the case do I dare guess which parent is filled with sweetness and which one is filled with a bit of mischief...?

Girl's Nannual Weekend

Sometimes your family ends up being spread across the country and sometimes distance becomes an excuse for not getting together. Not for these girls. Every year they meet in the designated host's city and sisters, cousins, aunts, nieces, moms, and nanny spend the weekend laughing, crafting, shopping, eating, and having the biggest slumber party you can imagine.

They joke that it took them 8 hours to agree on a name for their weekend long party. The weekend is a girls family reunion, but really it's all about nanny. And nanny doesn't mind a bit.

The girls are pretty serious. I had a hard time getting them to loosen up a bit.

They were pretty unphotogenic too.
And oh, so camera shy.

The shoot was winding down and one by one each one of these beautiful girls decided they wanted their own pic with nanny too.
And since Starbucks runs are a such a big part of their weekend, we had to get one last shot.

Lincoln City Wedding

The toasts were almost completed when Brian and Jess got up to say their thank-you's. So many people had helped to make their day as special as it was and they wanted each of them to know how much their work was appreciated. But then Brian wanted to say one more thank you. He wanted to thank a very special woman. As he looked down at Jess, Brian told everyone on the room that he knew behind every amazing woman was an amazing mom. He was so lucky to have Jess and he wanted to thank her mom for helping to make her the woman that she was. In all my life I have never heard a sweeter thing come out of a groom's mouth.

Brian's dad got up for a toast as well. He warned Jess that Fitch men love their women. They put them up on a pedestal and never take them down.

And the thing was, I knew he was telling the truth. All day long I'd watched those words in action. From the first moment he saw her, Brian could not stop staring in amazement at Jess. He told her how proud he was of her and the wedding she put together. He would pull himself back a few feet from her just to get one more look at his bride. And Jess glowed when she was with him.

Those Fitch men and their pedestals....they must be on to something.

Meet the Kelly's

Some sessions are just easy and this was one of them. When a family can laugh together and smile as much as the Kelly's you know they've got something good. For me, it's the little things that stand out and make me smile - the kids still getting squeamish when their parents kiss, the entire family going to high school football games together, Mom in the background making faces to get Justin and Jen to smile, Justin and Jen smiling at mom in the background making silly faces, Jen staying with Justin while he had his senior pics done, being goofy together. All of it just says "family" to me.

They say a family that plays together stays together.I agree, but I also think a family who laughs together also stays together.

I know there isn't one perfect family, but I also know love and connection when I see it. They might be riding in separate cars or sitting in different sections for those football games, but the point is they are all there together. They have common ground and some common talking points. As parents, Brian and Traci still have a foot in their kids' world. And more importantly their kids like it that way.

Thanks Kelly family for giving all of us with young ones something to shoot for.

Kishan's American Post

I lied. I can't double up. The last post got too long and this guy is just so cool. In fact, I think he'll probably get two posts. Yeah, that's how cool he is.

We'll call this his American post. It's him wearing jeans, American Eagle, and roaming through downtown Vancouver. America's Vancouver. The first part of our session started with skirts, saris, and musical instruments shipped straight from India. I can't wait to share it.

Kishan is pretty amazing. Whoever said that the only things high school students care about are dances, football scores, cell phones, and cars has not met Kishan Patel. Kishan does not fit the mold. And I think he likes it that way. He knows who he is, what he wants, and has enough confidence to get there. He speaks four languages, plays too many instruments to count, spent over a month in India last summer without his parents, and is a walking encyclopedia on all things Indian. His musical accomplishments are impressive, but I wll share more about those later.

So, yeah he's got the brains. But he's also got those deep brown eyes and an infectious smile. Some might say it's not fair. Rumor has it there's quite a few moms and grandmas out there who are hoping their daughters might catch his eye.

Whew! What a month!

How did I get to be so lucky? I've had a slew of amazing clients lately. And you know that whole 7 degrees of separation thing? Well, for the past month I've seen it in action.

It all started with the Jensen family. Robin saw their pictures and then found me. After her family session session she referred a friend who then referred two more friends. And of course they each received a referral gift from me.

This month, I'm shooting 7 families who all came to me by referrals. My business is primarily based off word of mouth so it means the world to me when you send your friends over. Seriously, thank you all for having so much confidence in me. I have the best clients!

I'm a little bit behind on this blog, so I'm going to attempt to do some doubling up.

Here are a couple amazing senior guys I shot last week. Both are musicians. Both are friends with Whitney. That last little bit? Well, because the came to me through Whitney, I knew I was going to like them. If they were friends with one of the happiest girls I've met, I figured I'd have some fun with them too.

Alex is brilliant. He may not know it or may not yet have figured out a way to apply his brilliance, but he will. I asked him the age old question "so, what do you want to do with your life?" His reply was awesome. Simply put, he wants to invent things. And not just anything. He wants to apply new laws of physics and make a pretty rad collapsing bicycle. His passion is to improve upon things we use everyday to make them more efficient. Umm...yeah. I think I was just trying to find ways to skip math class.
He also plays in a rock band. So, that makes him cool and smart. Nice combo.

Meet Kayla

Her mom and I had a couple of quick conversations about where we should do Kayla's senior session. When I emailed the third time just making sure I knew exactly what Kayla was looking for, her mom's response brought a smile to my face. "The truth is," she said, "Kayla's going to look great wherever we go."

"Great?"

Thinkin' that might have been an understatement.

"Gorgeous" is more like it.

Kayla made my job easy. With her size 0 frame, dark hair, and sparkling blue eyes, my camera fell in love.

She's quiet, but has an easy smile. As we walked through Portland we talked about school, an after school program she's a part of that the police department runs, cosmetology, and how she has a knack for making things look good.

Kayla will graduate this spring with aspirations to pursue interior architecture where she'll nurture her artistic side and spread those creative talents.

Adorable...

Isn't she just the cutest thing EVER?? I felt pretty good about myself as we walked hand in hand within minutes of meeting. We played hide and seek, picked some apples, and read a few books. She smiled, made faces, and wore my princess crown perfectly. Soon, images of me winning the child charmer of the year award were dancing around my head.

And then just as I was about to walk on stage to accept my award, she was done. As if to remind me who was charming whom, she matter-of-factly looked at her mom and said, "It's time for her to go now, Mommy."

Me? Did she really mean me? There had to be some mistake. I could pull out bubbles or stuffed animals or pinwheels... but no, she was done. With me.

I love the way her saunter matches her personality. This little girl knows what she wants and she's not afraid do say it.

Meet Kelsey

Sidenote: I'm sitting here in my new office with my 5th grader by my side. He's working on an essay and I'm typing for my blog. I love this. I love his desk next to mine. I love our time. Together.

Note to self: Do not do a photo shoot in the Pearl on an empty stomach. On a recent Thursday Miss Kelsey and I headed over to the Pearl for her senior session. Portland is a gem. The sights, sounds, and smells make my heart rate quicken and my soul come alive, but every restaurant we walked past made my stomach growl louder. No, Portlanders, there was not an earthquake last Thursday it was just my tummy responding to the meca of dining opportunities that lie within your reach. The Pearl Bakery, Irving Street Kitchen, Sin Ju, Andina, Bridgeport Brewery..... can you tell I'm hungry now? I must have a problem.

Kelsey rocked her senior session. The clothes she brought were perfect and the light that evening made her eyes shine. I just love the seniors I've gotten to meet and Kelsey is no exception. As she heads into her senior year, she's focused on making a difference and giving back. Instead of being consumed with herself, she's decided to help mentor a handful of younger girls from her church. Kelsey, you're awesome!

Dads and Daughters

Her dad's on his way to buy handcuffs the minute he sees these. I just know it. I can tell by the way she works those big brown eyes of hers that she has her dad wrapped around her little finger...and her thumb...and her pointer...and maybe even her big toe.

A girl's bond with her dad is a special thing. I adore the times I see my daughter curled up in her dad's arms or her hand wrapped in his. On the way home from a photo session tonight John Mayer's song about dads and daughters came on the radio. I didn't get to grow up in the same house as my dad, but when I visited one of the things I always looked forward to was him telling me how beautiful he thought I was. With all of my ten year old mad beauty skills, I'd curl my hair or put on headbands and I knew the minute I came out of the bathroom ready to go he'd make some big to do. The words were always the same, but I never tired of hearing them. He'd pull me next to him and tell me he had to keep me close to keep all the boys away. And sitting there next to him I somehow always felt like the most beautiful girl in the room.

C'mon Get Happy

Pure joy. That's what she is. She rolled out of the car laughing and didn't stop until we finished. Serious looks were out of the question. It wouldn't have been her anyway. When we tried she only laughed some more. She's light. She's grounded. She knows what she wants. And she's got life lassoed into her happiness harness.

Meet the Pinnocks

Some families are just easy. They are easy to photograph, easy to get comfortable, and easy to laugh with. The Pinnocks wanted to throw a few family images into their son's senior session, because really, how many guys are looking forward to numerous outfit changes and hours in front of the camera? I thought it was a great idea. We met at their home which sits on some beautiful property.
When I leave sessions like this one, I'm always picturing my own family at this stage in life. Will my kids really be this old someday??? Part of me is so excited to see who they become, but the other part of me wants to put on the brakes and make time stop. I'm already counting down how many summers I have left until Blake graduates. There are so many things I still want to do and so many memories I still want to make. Then I see the Pinnocks. I see their grown children. I see their laughter. I see how connected they are and it calms my heart a bit.

Sisters

Shoots like this make me wish I lived closer to my sister or saw her more. The bond of sisterhood that these girls will always share is just magical. Daytime squabbles turn to nighttime giggles. They'll look back onto a life filled with memories of dressing up and dancing and hugging and doing things only sisters do. Every girl needs a sister. Some find it over time spent with friends and lazy summer days and shared secrets. These girls are lucky enough to be born into it.

The Brahmer Clan Part 1

Have you ever read a book and just wanted to jump right into the pages? I felt that same way as I walked into the Brahmer household. Kids running everywhere, a scrumptious buffet spread out on the counter, and love apparent. I felt like jumping right into the Brahmer family. This past week three siblings and their spouses gathered for a bit of a family reunion at their parents beautiful home along the Washougal River. Their clan included 6 kids under the age of 3, lots of laughter, and spontaneous renditions of favorite children's songs. Can we build it? YES we can!!

I'll be blogging more on this wonderful family, but today is Everley's day. This girl knows how to rock life to the fullest. Whether it's water, rocks, climbing through playhouse windows, or making silly faces. Life does not pass her by. Mom and Dad were simply amazing and kept our session fun and filled with smiles. They'll be welcoming baby number two to their family in a few months.

Anticipation of a Prince

After four kids I sometimes forget about all the excitement and anticipation that comes with your first pregnancy. Every little kick and movement is met with such glee. Every detail of the baby's room, wardrobe, and anticipated schedule is thought out. And each day brings you closer to holding your firstborn babe in your very own arms. Priscilla came up from Arizona and spent the weekend getting pampered and doted on by her friends and family. In just a couple of months she'll have her little prince to pamper too. I had the privilege of shooting her baby shower on Saturday and then her belly session on Sunday.

Baby Wyatt is already being called a little Prince, so I brought a crown to make it official.

Meet Lindsey

It took us awhile but we finally connected. I guess that's what happens when you're trying to work with a superstar. Lindsey and her horse travel the Unites States competing in shows and blowing away the competition while they are at it. She wouldn't come right out and say how well she did at World's, but when you're being recruited by major colleges for their equestrian programs I'm guessing the chances are she placed pretty high. Add in the fact that she's a cheerleader and some of you might be wondering if it's really fair for a girl to be this beautiful and talented. I'd give you an answer but somehow I just keep getting lost in those gorgeous blue eyes.

For all you high school seniors out there, if you go to Hockinson High School make sure to mention Lindsey's name when setting your session date. You'll both get a bonus for doing so!

And Then There Were Three

Tiny. Fresh. Brand new. Nothing quite compares to the sight and smell of a newborn baby. And this one is absolutely perfect. And his parents are obviously head over heels in love with him. In just over a week he has made his way into their hearts like no other thing has or could. I always marvel at how incredible the gift of life is and how these sweet little beings change our lives forever.

A Girl and Her Horse

I was silly enough to ask her what her favorite thing was - horses, of course. She's had Chip for awhile, but she's loved horses for as long as she can remember. Tall, blue-eyed, beautiful, and completely smitten by her horse, K's summer is going to be made by spending time with Chip at a couple of local fairs. It's a horse girl's dream come true, really. Days will be spent at the barn with friends and horses by her side. Judging by her her ability to maneuver Chip around for my camera, I think she'll do pretty well showing in the arena too. Good luck you two!

Jess and Brian

The yin and the yang - that's what they are. Watch Brian and Jess for a few minutes and it's easy to see that they easily balance each other. Where one hesitates, the other gently pushes along. When one gets a bit nervous, the other provides some comic relief. They met online and after phone calls that unexpectedly lasted hours, decided to make the leap and meet in person. I asked Brian what he thought when he actually saw her and he smiled, "she was gorgeous." Brian asked this gorgeous gal to be his wife and the two will get married in Lincoln City later this year.

I was so excited that they chose Bridal Veil Falls to be their engagement shoot location. We had tossed round a few ideas, but none of them seemed quite right. Then Jess emailed me and asked if I would drive out to Bridal Veil because the falls just fit them. Every engagement shoot location should be an extension of the couples personality and it was perfect.

Thanks so much you two. Can't wait for your wedding in September!

Meet the Galanters

I'll admit it. I was a bit nervous about this shoot. I wanted to do a great job because this family is near and dear, but this was also my first "not so little kids anymore" family shoot. And the truth is, after the age of ten it becomes painfully obvious that I'm just not that funny. Talking about stinky feet and Handy Manny just doesn't bring the same kind of laughs as it does with my younger old crowd. After I take out tickle wars, daddy dog piles, and a kid toss or two what do I have left?

What I had left was the Galanters. And that was plenty. How can I possibly describe the Galanters in one simple paragraph because nothing about them seems simple. They're fighters. Over the past couple of years, they've faced one of the biggest fears a family can face. They overcame Cancer. Together. They're change makers. From being involved in local students' lives to leading worship to working at summer camps to just being a friend, each one of them lives a life devoted to loving others. If you measure a life by how much impact it has made, each one of them has lived long.

For them, family pictures are a bit of a tradition and I love it. I love that they didn't stop documenting their family after the kids got older. And though it probably was not the kids' favorite way to spend an evening in Portland I love that they got out in front of the camera just for mom.

One that Caught me Eye

It's official. I love laughter and joy and love and cheek squishing, heart melting hugs. Doing some late night editing tonight while trying to catch up after being gone almost the whole month of June and came across this one. I had to share because it just makes me happy inside. More to come later, but for now I hope this one makes you all smile as well;)

Meet the Thales

As I got out of my car, two beautiful girls and their cousin ran out to greet me. They quickly ushered me through the garage entrance and into their kitchen to meet the rest of the family. I immediately felt like I was home - right at home in their beautiful home. Formalities were short and we soon settled into casual talk. I was offered a glass of wine and it was soon apparent that the girls' confidence and hospitality were not an accident. They were characteristics bread within a family that knows how to welcome people into it.

I could have sat and chatted with the Thales all night long, but the thought of getting those girls in front of my camera was pretty inviting too.

After the shoot was finished, their oldest and I were leaving the house at the same time. She jumped into her car ready to drive down the road, but then paused, got back out, and ran over to give me a hug and say thank-you. Melt my heart, you beautiful girl, you. Thales, you are most definitely doing something right.

I couldn't wait for the sun to set a bit so we could make our way out onto their AMAZING outdoor entertainment area. It was all I could do to stop myself from firing up their grill and settling in for summer fun. No, no, that is most definitely not a hint at inviting me back over for a summer party...I would never do that:)

Round and Round She Goes....

Round and round she goes, where she stops no one knows. The kids jumped out of the car and into eachother's arms. They hugged, they laughed and they ran and they ran and they ran and they ran and phew! Dull might as well be a four letter word when these kids get together. I'm not sure we even had five solid minutes of focus. They just wanted to play. Together.

Round and round she goes, where she stops no one knows. Some have a simple definition of family that has to do with whom came out of whose belly, common heritage, and blood type. But others, they have a larger definition that has to do with love, destiny, and sacrifice. These nine people define family in the truest sense of the word. One mother's act of selfless love gave another woman the chance to be called Mom. But really, she didn't say goodbye to her twins, she said hello to an amazing couple and grew her family even larger. And that amazing couple not only filled their hands with precious babes, they filled their hearts with love for 5 more. Now they gather together as one family.

As I was trying to catch up with the kids I overheard one mom laugh at the craziness and jokingly say "what have I done to this world?" I couldn't see the two of them, but the next words came out with the tenderness of a giant hug, "you've blessed it with beautiful children".

Meet the Conways

It's not every day that you come across a man changing clothes on the side of the road. As he changed his shirt, cars passed and we laughed. Then we kept right on laughing for the next half an hour. I knew from the beginning that they were a moustache family, and not every family is a moustache family. Some are pinwheel families, some are bubble families, and some are kissing families. I've pulled out the moustaches a few times. Sometimes it's on the family's request, but this time it was my request. Dad and son are master and apprentice when it comes to dry humor. And the moustache? Well, it just belonged on them.

The more families I shoot, the more I know this is what I love to do. Family is precious. Family is a gift. Some days being a family is easy and some days being a family is really hard work. But in the end it's the most important thing we will ever do.

The love here is real. I think this was my favorite moment in the session. I don't know what he was saying or what she was saying, but I have a whole series of them smiling and nuzzling.

Julie just makes you feel comfortable. She's real. She's fun. She's hilarious. And she knows when to ignore the laundry pile in exchange for a good time. I've often heard it said that as we grow older we aren't going to wish we had spent more time at work or cleaning the house. We are going to wish we had spent as much time as possible with the ones we love. Julie's got that down. Her kids are loved and they know it.

And Supermom must be married to Superdad, because this is what he got her for Mother's Day.

I met them in a parking garage. Any worry I had about finding Emily and her mom went right out the door as I drove in and saw a lady with her arms full of shoes. And I smiled. Arms full of shoes are like mugs filed with Chai. They make me very happy. Vans, nude pumps, the boots I've been dying for, and some adorable green vintagy wedges sat in a heap of goodness, and in that instant I knew it was going to be a good session.

For many, high school is almost over. In just a few short weeks, it's "goodbye" to one phase and "hello" to the next. I have not met one senior who wasn't excited about moving on. To all of my 2010 seniors, "Congratulation! Go rock this place!"

Some Pretty Good Apples

They say apples don't fall far from the tree. If that's the case, Vancouver City Councilman Bart Hansen and his wife Carly are pretty great 'cause I could have hung out with their kids all day long. I imagine we would have quoted lines from Napoleon Dynamite, ran through the fields at Officer's Row, thrown thoughts of impending grass stains to the wind, and I'd have been schooled on the proper "tackle hug" techniques. Because after all, I learned a hug isn't a hug unless someone's on the ground. For that matter a kiss isn't a kiss unless someone's nose is flattened like a deflated pancake.

This family is connected in all the right ways and their kids are amazing!

Oh, Councilman Hansen, you are one lucky man. Behind every successful man is an amazing wife. Carly's got that covered.

A career in theater perhaps? He flat out entertained me the entire time.

The stars aligned and in a matter of about 24 hours phone calls, booking, outfit selections, and a drive down from Seattle for senior pics was completed. Kailey arrived with mom and sister in tow, who by the way, provided just enough teasing and taunting for a few good laughs. In just a few weeks she'll graduate and Kailey's already for the world. Next fall she'll head off to college in pursuit of a career in teaching.

Thanks Kailey for making the drive down to the 'couve. Hope your last few weeks of senior year are amazing!

John + Hilaree and Their Two Little Mini Me's

Last night was such a breath of fresh air. Sometimes you just need the sun and yesterday was one of those days. John, Hilaree, and their adorable little men brought more sun to my evening. We traipsed through the grass, wished on dandelions, and giggled while I tried to stay on the fiery red head's good side. Okay, that sounds a little too picturesque. I actually made a total fool of myself while trying to stay on the fiery red head's good side.

They were comfortable in their own skin and comfortable just being family. I love it when I can stand back and simply watch love in action.

It started off as any old Sunday but turned out to be the Sunday that changed his life. Heading down the aisle after church one Sunday, John spotted Mary. It may have been her sparkling brown eyes or her dark wavy locks, but something caused John to do a double take and he's hasn't looked away since.

Some might call their relationship a bit of a whirlwind, but those who know them best have smiled with confidence since their two names started being spoken together in one sentence. Two amazing people, grounded in their faith and in their character; John and Mary belong together.

Their wedding was everything weddings should be. Love. Laughter. And Kisses. Nestled on a lake near Seattle, at a camp Mary grew up attending, surrounded by their closest friends and family, John gave Mary the kiss that sealed their fate as one.

Inspired by Heidi over at Velvet Owl, I decided to have a little fun submitting to I Heart Faces. This week's challenge is all about angles. One of my favorite places to play with extreme angles is on a dance floor at a wedding reception. Often, I'll lay on the ground, lift my camera high above my head, shoot from my hip, or jump on a chair to get an interesting perspective.

This shot was from last weekend's wedding. The crowd split like the red sea and I high tailed it over just in time to catch this shot. I'm not sure what makes me laugh more - the tie wrapped around his head or the horrified look of the bystander in back.
Every wedding needs a guest like this. It helps even more if they're the best man.

If there ever was a mom after my own heart, Angie would be it. From chickens to homeschooling, the more she shared about their life, the more times I found myself saying, "me too." Honestly, I started to think I should hold back because I was beginning to sound obnoxious, like the little sister in Mercer Mayer books who follows her cool big brother around everywhere he goes. Angie and Jed are cool like that.

And so are their kids. Each one is unique. They have the princess with the flowery shoes and wide brimmed hat. She'd make any fashionista proud. Even though her shoes pinched a little she wasn't about to leave them off. Then Mr. Man who in a matter of 30 seconds jumped out of the car and was on his way to the top of a dirt pile. As soon as I was done with our individual shots, he had a stick in his hand. And then there was Miss Responsible who talked about how much work it was raising chickens and how excited she was about learning to read. Her little grin just about melted my camera.

Despite having three little ones, being 6 months pregnant, homeschooling, and living on a mini farm, there is a quiet calm about Angie and Jed. I got the feeling that they don't get riled up over the little things and instead spend their time focusing on the things that really matter.

Once upon a time there was a little girl who loved to smile a smile so bright it could wash away the darkest cloud. One look at their precious girl could melt Mommy's and Daddy's heart in an instant. She smiled so much that her mommy thought it would be the perfect time to schedule a photo session. The much anticipated day of the shoot arrived and poor Miss Georgia woke up with a slight cold. Despite a raspy little cough, her sweetness still shined through. Even though she wasn't feeling princess perfect, she rarely fussed. She stared at us all with those amazing blue eyes, became enamored with her adorable rainbow Baby Legs, cuddled with her gorgeous mommy, and then drifted off to sleep. And like any princess should be, she was equally as adorable while she slept.

Love Me a Little Library Time

I love library day. It usually isn't planned but that makes it more fun. Sometimes I use it as "inspiration" for the boys to get crackin'. So many people ask me how homeschooling is going. The honest truth is that I really, REALLY like it. I feel like all of our kids are where they are supposed to be. Mya is at school; it's perfect for her and the boys are at home which is working great for them. We follow some set curriculum, attend a couple of classes at River Homelink, and then fit in our extra activities which for me, makes it all worthwhile. I LOVE this time I have with the boys.

Three Creeks Library is just down the road.

They know which aisle has the books they want and I absolutely melt when I see them working together like this.

I made them use the electronic catalog to answer some questions about finding books. Of course, they look at me and can't believe I'm trying to take the fun out of today's trip. After they are done, Trenton settles in quickly with his Northwest field guide filled with pictures and descriptions of amphibians and snakes.

Blake found a junior fishing book for Chase. All three of them on the floor looking at the book together....

Of course, all Blake wants to do is find any fishing book he hasn't yet read. A kind librarian tries to point Blake in the direction of the junior books and Blake doesn't quite know what to say. This kid only want the real deal. Chase thinks he's helping and grabs all sorts of aquarium fish books too.

This is so them. I LOVE it.

And what library trip is complete without a great hopscotch mat?

This is the kind of image I want to seal in my heart forever. Shaggy, blonde boys, Chase feeling like a big kid, and a lady at the checkout counter who almost knows them by name.

When He Looks At Me

Yeah, I feel a bit self-indulgent posting so many of my littlest man, but I just can't help myself. Lately, he seems to be the only one who willingly gets in front of my camera. We were at chess club, bored, and it wasn't raining. Plus, I just needed to get a camera in my hands. The slowness of January is so nice, but I'm itching to start creating again.

You know, it's funny. Up until a few years ago I never realized how much creating things were a part of me. During a marriage conference hubby and I took personality tests and mine revealed that a huge part of who I am is "creative." At first I was surprised. I instantly identified the word creative with artist. And I knew I wasn't an artist! I had never thought of myself as a "creative" because quite frankly I stink at any kind of painting or drawing. Honestly, I can barely make a circle. But looking back into my life, it began to make sense. Throughout the years I remembered getting these antsy feelings and saying that I just needed to make something. So, I would cook some yummy dish, maybe scrapbook, re-arrange a room, plan an elaborate party, or make babies. When I read the results of that test a lightbulb literally went off.

And so it began. All you moms out there know how hard it is to make time for yourself but I realized that I needed to purposely cultivate the creative part of me. With four little ones, making time for myself wasn't easy and it took a while for me to stop feeling guilty about investing in me. I spent countless hours researching photography, went to a couple of classes, and started to give myself the freedom to dream about doing something as impractical as building a photography business. I still can't believe how many people have trusted me with their family memories. Our mealtime menus may not be as fancy, my room is mostly a mess, and though we still go through the process, babies are no longer being made, but there is a new part of me that is alive and that makes for one happy momma.

You are an amazing Dad. I wasn't sure what to think when I came home and saw this, but then it all became clear. You must have been having the pillow fight of all pillow fights. That would explain my bed linens all over the floor, the kids' pillows on our bed, the fallen box of curtain rods, and the absolute exhaustion with which it looks like you all fell asleep. I'm sure on any other night you would never send the kids to bed with dirty feet and their clothes on. It must have been a blast. I love you.

I was with the Graves family for about 30 minutes. They had me laughing. They had themselves laughing. If I had my dog with me, even she would have been laughing. From their inside jokes to their exasperated giggles to their outward displays of affection, they were the epitome of family. My Crazy Little Man

I sat there and just stared at his milky skin and big blue eyes. I was washing his hair and he kept asking my why I looked at him like that. I couldn't help it. Really. My heart simply bursts with love for this crazy little man of mine. I told him it's because I love him and he matter of factly replied, "Well, I know that, Mom."

I love it when he says that. He knows he is loved. He's my last and some days I just can't hold on to him tight enough. If I could freeze time, I would. But this is the closest thing I can do. So I grab my camera, click my shutter, and promise myself I won't let days just pass.

These are the moments that you just want to drink into your soul. It was their own version of a Besaw's breakfast. I believe the recipe was called "Melt in Your Mouth Supreme Pancakes". Blake accidentally added extra vanilla and Trent said it was okay because "just like cilantro, you can never have too much." Topped with Trader Joe's Wild Blueberry syrup and real blueberries, it was, in their words, scrumpdidliumptious. In my words, it was a morning where everyone got along for more than a few minutes. Yeah...that pretty much qualifies as scrumpdidliumptious for me too.

Baby Love

Baby Bliss. That's what they were up to. Pure baby bliss. Oh, yes there is that part about recovering from a C-section, waking at odd hours, and not being able to accomplish a smidgen of what you use to, but despite that there is pure joy. Spending Christmas with your first newborn, hubby being around for weeks until school starts again, and family just itching to hold sweet baby all amount to a season in life that is nothing short of cherished.

It was a little cold and a little wet, but this show had to go on. It's not everyday that a mom can manage to get three teenage sons free from their social obligations and work duty.

I live in the kind of neighborhood that everyone wants to live in and these friends are just one reason why. Our kids roam freely from one house to the next munching on snacks and knowing house rules. She's the kind of neighbor I can always borrow a cup or two or three of anything from and the one who might have that obscure spice sitting on her shelf too. I think my youngest might even have them wrapped around his little finger because even he has been invited over for dinner. When I think of Joe and Liz, I think of parties and gatherings and yummy meals. They have a knack for opening their home and filling it with people they love.

Well, it's officially Christmas Eve and I couldn't be more excited to announce my contest winner. I've got to tell you, though, this was hard. As in H.A.R.D. I thought every aspect of giving away a family portrait session would be fun because I love giving gifts and I kept thinking how excited a family was going to be. But then I started getting the nominations and I wanted everyone to win because every single one of those nominated deserved to win. Trust me, I've spent the last few days trying to figure out if I could just make everyone a winner. They all had stories that pulled my heart strings.

Every one of those families nominated are so blessed to have friends who would take the time to submit a nomination on their behalf. Thank-you for the nominations and even if your friend did not win, I encourage all you nominators to keep finding ways to bless your friends. They need you.

And now to the exciting part, this nomination quickly stood out. Those of you who are close to me know that childhood cancer has come closer to our circle of friends than I would ever want. Every time I hear of another child who is diagnosed my heart cries. The littlest member of this family was diagnosed with Leukemia this past summer. He underwent chemo and a bone marrow transplant in November and is on his way to recovery. While I can't wipe out this part of your lives, Joel and Sarah, I do hope that this gift can provide you with hope and let's you know that people out there really do care. I can't wait to give you photographs documenting your beautiful family held together with grace and love.

Please pray for me as I keep asking God how I can get more involved helping families who are battling cancer. I honestly wish I didn't have to worry about making money and could just gift these families all the time.

I love my job. Every time a customer picks up one of my little white boxes, I feel like I'm giving them a gift - the best kind of gift possible. Memories are tucked inside that box and sealed onto paper. Their children's smiles preserved for generations, little hugs and giggles documented and ready to warm a heart whenever needed. However, I know that not everyone can afford custom photography right now. So...

For a Good Time Call...

So, I've always thought we have a pretty fun house. I mean really, bikes and tricycles owned our living room until we had furniture, but we ain't got nothin' on this family. When my son came home from spending time at their house he only had one word - "AWESOME". Flat screen tv's, Wii games, footballs flying, and crazy good times everywhere. When it comes to the word "fun", the Pulicella's own it.

We first met the Pulicella's on a coincidental camping trip. We pulled up with our 20ft rented travel trailer and parked it right next to their 100ft mansion on wheels. I think our boys thought our site was cool for about, oh...2 seconds. We soon found out that our mansionly neighbors had a son who went to school with our oldest and the camping trip was ten times more fun because of it.

Over the River and Through the Woods

She called it clutter. I call it remnants of creativity. Because right next to that small pile of papers were freshly painted wood pumpkin cutouts. And right next to those freshly painted pumpkins were walls adorned with their children's creative powers. And next to those walls were doors leading to 5 beautiful acres filled with an organic garden and free range chickens. And really, when you're tending to all that goodness who has time for a few unfiled papers?

The love simply danced around this family. It showed in their smiles, their attention to little details, the love letters to their children gracing walls, the secret nook built especially for big brother's imagination to soar, and in their commitment to raise their children their own way. Which often means walking down a road less traveled, but oh, so rewarding.

Oh To Be Two

This family epitomizes cool. They own an amazing day spa, dabbled in creating a neighborhood cafe, work in real estate and if that wasn't enough they totally sealed their personal coolness factor by becoming true urbanites. They left suburbia for... The Pearl. When I first heard what they were doing I was jealous. Really. Really. Jealous. No one but the coolest people on the block could pull off such a gutsy move and their year was amazing. Restaurants, culture, shops, and neighbors - everything was within walking distance and at two years old their little one already knows the Pearl like it was her own personal playground. Did I mention I was jealous?

Haley and Taylor are more than cool. They are pretty amazing parents too. Some people just "get" it and they definitely fall into the "getting it" category. Whenever I see parents stooping down to enter into their children's world it makes me smile. As busy parents with a lot on our plates, it's so easy to rush around, try to get everything done and expect our children to follow, smile for the camera, and happily move onto our next important task. When in reality all our children want to do is explore their world, point at goldfish, and find one more amazing rock. And you know what? That's okay. It's more that okay. It's beautiful, and Haley and Taylor get that.

You know, the camera rarely lies. When people love each other, it shows. And me and my camera, we LOVE families who love. This family is all about love. The smiles flowed easy and didn't stop even when my camera was packed and ready to go home. With a smile as wide as the Mississippi, Beckie glowed as she watched her babies pose and interact. I couldn't even begin to get Little Miss to stop smiling. When I tried for a pensive dow-eyed look she just looked at me and laughed some more. And then came Marley. I'm not sure I know of a dog who is more loved than this guy. I wish I could have bottled the smile of pride a boy gets when he is walking the most amazing dog in the world. With all of that going on and with a family as amazing as his, how could Aaron do anything but smile as well.

Made for You

Perhaps it is because I have three of my own, but I always have a soft spot for boys and an even softer spot in my heart for moms with boys. Blogland, meet Wendy. In an instant I could tell Wendy was made for boys - for her boys. She had this tried and true calmness about her and just let them be, well...boys. For those of you who have boys, you know what I mean. In an instant things can go from relatively calm and classy to throwing bodies and belches When one of her boys decided to pull the bunny ears out, she didn't stress and knew I would eventually have to get one without the added appendages. When they wanted to run, she didn't worry about falling and knee stained pants. She giggled at their goofy smiles and laughed even harder when the boys' attempts to make each other smile created more flying bodily functions.

This is an awesome family. You can see it in Wendy's ability to kneel down and get into her boys' world and in Dad's proud smiles. They aren't caught up in fancy schmancy pretenses but just love being together and having fun.

Leaving High School With More Than a Degree

This lovely family is the result of a high school flame that never died. Who knows, maybe it was in English class while trying to figure out which one of their teacher's eyes they should be following, or at a pep assembly while singing I'm an Eagle Born, or in the cafeteria while gnawing on a cheese zombie, somewhere across the halls of Hudson's Bay Brad spotted this blonde beauty and they've been together ever since. And now they've created more blonde beauties to make my camera happy.

The Eyes of a Child

Wiggly, giggly, and full of life, those are my favorite ones to shoot. They wear their personalities like some wear their hearts, right on the edge of their sleeve. And don't think for a minute these wiggly giggly ones have time for a girl and her camera. I don't have enough jokes stockpiled or crazy faces memorized to entertain them for long. One quick glance and then they're gone - onto something more exciting than the same old black rectangle that doesn't even emit a flash.

But often one quick glance is enough. It's enough time to capture their eyes full of sparkle and mischief and wonder. And, oh what the rest of the world could learn from these eyes filled with sparkle and mischief and wonder. To have the eyes of a child is the greatest gift of all.

We've been friends with the Kaluas for quite some time and to say that I enjoy working with their girls is an understatement. Their four year old reminds me so much of my own little spitfire and I love to watch her go. Their oldest is beyond brilliant. Her mind absolutely amazes me and I can't wait to see what disease she ends up curing or what modern day marvel she invents. Love you guys!

Her car reminded me of mine back in the day. Yes, internet world, I say back in the day because my car always is oh-so-spotless now. Clothes were piled, a necklace was laying on the seat, some shoes were laying on the floor, and a cheer leading uniform was in there somewhere. She had just come from somewhere because isn't that what you do when you are a senior? You are always coming and going from one fantastic social event to the next. I'm not sure she even had time to really get ready for her shoot. And then between her pile of clothes and some boots I had brought she does this.

Between her comings and goings she takes a couple of hours and effortlessly creates beautiful images.

They Told Me So

Yep, these are my babies. And this is how they look everyday. And this is how they interact all the time. And this is how they laugh all day long. And we all had such a good time while taking pictures together.

Pictures can lie my dear friends; they really can.

The real facts behind this little photo shoot:
Smiles were bribed with ices cream AND pizza.
Curled hair was allowed if she could pick the ice cream place.
Innocent people out for stroll along the Salmon creek Trail were subjected to the yells of a crazy lady echoing through the marshes.
840 frames later I found 70 I liked.
My middle son was told to go wait up on the trail and that he would not be making it onto the Christmas card or family pictures on our wall.

Yes, people even though I laugh, smile, and truly enjoy your children's antics. I am truly human when it comes to my own.

And then they told me I was taking this photo thing too seriously. I needed to let them have fun. And so I did. We ran through the grass. We found a frog. We fell back into the thick marshes. We brought out our nets. We chased. We really laughed.

Rule #1 - Start with fun and avoid the crazy lady yells altogether. Think this one could apply to more than just a photo shoot. Don't ya think?

When Blake fell back into the grass, this bad boy was right next to his face. I came back a couple of weeks later and was laying on my back while taking a shot. All of a sudden I felt a wet, slimy sensation on my neck and started freaking out. Mr. Frog found me again.

Oh, I really owed him lots for getting so cuddly with his sister.

I'm so bummed this one has so much grain. The sun was setting and I had to push my ISO so high.

I adore this shot because it so him. The crazy hair, quirky look, bright eyes, and refusal to look my way. That's my baby.

Generations of Love

This was a labor of love. Sometimes parents have to work extra hard to make their session happen. Steve and Lee Ann did an awesome job of gathering their whole family for portraits and then were equally as awesome when their littlest was done with the session before I was. They did their absolute best to keep the smiles instead of pulling their hair, and I think it was so worth it. A little piece of history was preserved, a relationship with grandparents and awesome Uncle Eric was documented, and years from now they will be so glad for the memories caught on camera. Let me just say, as a little girl who ADORED her grandparents I love when grandparents and grandchildren are caught on camera together. Good job Steve and Lee Ann.

The Performance

The spotlight brightens

I'm up on my toes

performing what i've practiced
for so long every day.

A mix of grace and grit, we've been talking about this session since we last met in June. We both wanted to see what the juxtoposition of ballet's beauty and Portland's industrial would turn out like. It is good! Really good. Caitlin you were a trooper as I had you jump, jump, and jump again. I think those boys in the moving van wished they could have watched a bit longer.
I'm hoping to team up with Caitlin and her dancing friends for some more really soon.

Don't Let the Party Stop

While the rest of us were bundling up, building fires, and turning on the heat. The Storaci family was still celebrating summer, but that's kind of what the Storacis are good at. They know how to keep the party going. If a house isn't a home unless it's full of friends and family, their home has never been merely a house. And their life is rarely anything but lived. Whether it's heading out for a good workout, running to soccer games, cheering on friends' teams, going out to dinner with friends, or snuggling in bed at the end of the day for some quiet prayer time together, the Storaci family is always moving and always getting the most out of life.

The kids were serious troopers during this "summer" session. I don't think I have ever done a shoot so fast and had kids look so good. Nice job guys!

Words Could Never be Enough

Sometimes things are a little close to the heart and you could never do them justice. That's how I feel about a blog write up for this family. I just could never do it justice. So, allow me if you will to give you little snippets - snippets of my heart and their life.

And here I am already tearing up just thinking about snippets...

This family is special - special because in the midst of pain they found moments of joy. This family is strong - strong because God Himself is strong. This family is hope because in Christ our hope never dies. Together they have fought cancer and together they are winnning. When many might have chosen to close themselves off to the world and question why they were dealt the cancer card, this family opened their lives and shared their struggles and victories with everyone and in the process a world was changed. Yes, literally a world. Nurses who are paid to serve have been served. Families alone in a children's hospital have been given hope and friendship. Friends who felt the blow of an economic crisis were daily reminded that our finances are nothing in comparison to the health of our children. Moms grieving over the unimaginable loss of a child found someone they could always call and lean on. So many people have been impacted by their faith, their unquestioning belief in an all-powerful, all-knowing God, and by their continuous quest to focus on the present and what God has for them right now instead of worrying about a future they have no control over.

God is faithful. Look at this beautiful family and say, "Good riddance" to cancer.

Tara Whitney did this back in June and I've been wanting to try it ever since. I think it fits them well.

The Brahmer Family

I can't even tell you how much I love images like these. They make me so happy. The quick giggles, the laughter, the snuggles by mom and dad, and the love. This is family and it's why I love to do what I do.
I can't even believe I'm typing this because it makes me feel old. It seems like it was just yesterday, but it obviously wasn't. When Britt was a senior in high school, she was in my small group. She even dated my brother for a short while. Now she has a family of her own and an adorable one at that. They have actually birthed two babies in the past two years. One being the cutie you see in these images, and the other is a growing chiropractic business - Body in Balance - on the east side of town. Both are thriving, and they have so much to be proud of.
Britt, thanks so much for calling me. You guys were awesome on Friday.

Dancing Her Way

She came bounding over to my car with a grin on her face and an obvious excitement for the shoot to begin. After we checked out her clothes, drug out the vintage chair, and finally started shooting I became more and more amazed with this beauty. Kara is beautiful -jaw dropping, crowd stopping beautiful- there is no denying that, but it was the easy giggle, hilarious attempt at running in cowboy boots, and up-for-anything attitude that had me loving her. Kara, don't ever forget how special you are and keep on wowing the world with whats on the inside just as much as they are wowed by what's on the outside.

Pure Sunshine

Words can't really express how bright this little girl really is. She is one giant ray of light dripping with sweet sunshine. If only everyone could feel life the way Miss Gracie does. We would laugh until the world joined too. We would allow earth's beauty to bring the smiles out of our soul. We would let the beauty of a flower overtake us so much that we couldn't help but pick it. We would wear sparkly red shoes just for fun. And we would all melt into the arms of loved ones. I got the Best of 'em

Yes, it's been too long and yes, I feel guilty. I've got so many wonderful sessions to post, but for now it's this beauty's turn.
Seriously, I think I somehow ended up with the most talented, studious, and go-get'em seniors in Clark County. And I'd be willing to go at it with any of my fellow photogs who tried to say otherwise.
Here's just another example of my AMAZING seniors. As we were walking towards our shoot location we got to talking about her plans for the upcoming year. She had quit the dance team this year because she had to have other priorities of which Running Start, working, and finding a great place to volunteer with kids topped her list. Then this beauty tells me she brought a book to incorporate into some of the shoot because she's always reading. She beautiful and smart too; and right now I know some of you can't help but scream, "no fair!" Stefanie is going places and she's not waiting until senior year is over to start her journey.

Lost in Her Eyes

Warm, buzzing with people, and always full of culture, the Pearl was perfect that night. And Pressley only made it more perfect. She's got eyes you could get lost in. After one shot, I immediately told her my camera was going to have fun with her blue beauties and those luscious lips as well. Wouldn't you all agree?

Life is a Highway

I pulled up to our meeting place at the Burgerville off Mill Plain and spied a little, white, very fast looking car. Out steps a little bleach blonde with the cutest bob I've seen in a while. And get this, she tells me she just had it cut. Yes, right before her senior portrait session. Right away I knew this girl had no fear. Later I learned she races jeeps, is taking cosmetology for fun, and is determined not to have to miss any football games due to a stressful senior year. This girl rocks as in really rocks. She rocks her car, rocks the little black dress, rocks her racing jeep, and will most definitely rock her senior year. She is living life. To. The. Fullest. And yes, boys, she is taken.
